Vietnam Travel Visa Checklist for Changed Flights and Re-entry

A Vietnam travel visa can be valid for the dates you picked and still be a poor fit for the trip you end up booking. A changed arrival airport, a side trip to Cambodia or a replacement passport can all change what you need to check. Use this guide to test the route against your travel documents before you buy tickets, and again before you leave.

Put your border crossings on one page

Write down every point where you plan to enter or leave Vietnam, with the local date, the exact airport or land checkpoint, and the passport you will present. Include short side trips and overnight connections. A flight from Hanoi to Da Nang stays within Vietnam. A flight from Hanoi to Bangkok followed by a flight back to Ho Chi Minh City adds a separate entry. A ticket confirmation shows where you are booked to travel. Your entry documents determine whether that plan works.

For example, Hanoi to Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City is a single stay if you enter in Hanoi and fly home from Ho Chi Minh City. Use the two-week Vietnam itinerary to sketch that route, then add the international flights to your checklist. If you insert a weekend abroad and return, review the second arrival as its own event.

Check your visa or exemption for each entry

Start with your nationality, passport type, trip purpose and intended length of stay. If you plan to enter under an exemption, confirm its conditions for your passport and route. Check your situation again for a return visit. Island-specific rules also deserve a separate check if you plan to continue to mainland Vietnam. The Vietnam entry planning guide covers the initial choice of entry route.

If you will rely on an e-visa to enter twice, check that your approval permits multiple entries and that both arrivals and your final departure fall within the approved period. A single-entry approval covers one entry. For a first application, see the Vietnam e-visa application guide for the application steps.

Recheck the route when your booking changes

Compare your approved document with the new itinerary before accepting a reroute. If a flight arrives after midnight, use the date at the Vietnamese airport. If your carrier moves your arrival from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, review the approved entry details and verify the current checkpoint requirements with Vietnam Immigration. For an overland leg, ask your transport operator for the exact checkpoint name. Two crossings serving the same region are still different places.

If a date, passport number or checkpoint no longer matches, ask the immigration authority what action is required before you travel. An airline can tell you what it needs for boarding, and the immigration authority can advise on the entry permission itself. Keep both questions separate when a change happens close to departure.

Compare the approval with your passport before check-in

Open the approval and check your name, passport number, validity dates and entry type against the physical passport and your current tickets. If you have renewed your passport since applying, contact immigration about the mismatch before using the approval. Keep the application reference available so you can describe the issue precisely.

Carry a printed copy of the approval and save an offline copy on your phone. Keep the first accommodation address and any onward booking handy. If traveling as a family, check every traveler separately, including children. A shared itinerary can still require individual documents.

Keep the same checklist for your departure

After arrival, review the terms of your admitted stay and compare them with your onward booking. Leave time for a missed connection or a changed flight, especially when you are booked to depart close to the end of your permission. If plans shift, consult the immigration authority before the permitted stay ends.
