For most U.S. passport holders visiting mainland Vietnam for tourism, the first step is to obtain a visa before travel. The Vietnam e-visa is an option for ordinary U.S. passports. This guide explains what to check before booking, how to review your approval, and when your route calls for extra care.
Check whether your itinerary requires a visa
Start with the passport you will present and your actual arrival route. The U.S. Department of State says American tourists generally need a visa. It describes a limited exception for qualifying stays of up to 30 days on Phu Quoc. If you are also visiting Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, confirm the permission required for that mainland leg. Check the official conditions before relying on an island exemption, especially if you connect through another Vietnamese airport.
Apply using your U.S. passport details
Use the official Vietnamese immigration portal and enter your information as shown on the passport. Have your itinerary, document image and portrait ready. Check that your passport has at least six months of validity from arrival and sufficient blank pages. If you have an emergency passport, ask Vietnamese immigration or a Vietnamese consular office about acceptance before paying. See our e-visa application guide for the application steps.
Choose the entry type and check your route
A single-entry visa can suit a continuous stay. If you plan to leave for Cambodia, Laos or another country and return to Vietnam, review whether you need multiple entries. Confirm that your intended crossings and dates fit the approval. Pay attention to the local arrival date on overnight flights from the United States. Our route checklist covers changes to flights and crossings.
Review the approval before you go to the airport
Check the approved name, passport number, dates, entry type and checkpoint details against your passport and reservation. Print a copy and keep an offline backup. If you find a mismatch, contact Vietnamese immigration before departure and allow time for corrections. Check current pre-arrival requirements with official sources and your airline close to the flight, since airport procedures can change.
Use the same passport and check your permitted stay
Present the passport associated with your approval and check your admitted stay after clearing immigration. Keep enough time before expiry for a delayed flight or missed connection. If your passport is lost or replaced in Vietnam, contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for passport assistance and Vietnamese immigration for guidance on your visa and departure.
